Picking up where Crystal Dynamics’ most recent trilogy of Tomb Raider games left off, The Legend of Lara Croft is an animated take on the iconic video game heroine that bridges the gap between the disparate video game entries. Hayley Atwell stars in the series as the voice of Lara Croft, with Richard Armitage voicing its villain Charles Devereaux, and Earl Baylon returning to voice Lara’s friend Jonah. The series takes Lara on a globetrotting adventure to recover a stolen artifact that leads her to an even more ancient mystery and a path to massive power. The series’ animation is done by Powerhouse Animation Studios, which is also responsible for Castlevania: Nocturne and Masters of the Universe.

Netflix Confirms More Tomb Raider Is On the Way
Close
On October 25, in time for the 28th anniversary of the release of the first Tomb Raider game in 1996, it was announced that Netflix had renewed Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft for a second season. The announcement came only two weeks after the launch of the animated series on Netflix, which proves the streamer has great faith in the project.
The news also came with the release of a still from Season 2 of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft which confirms that Lara’s best friend Sam Nishimura will play a role in Season 2. Sam was absent from the past two Tomb Raider games and did not appear in Season 1 of the animated series apart from a short flashback appearance. However, the series did set up her return in the final episode of Season 1, which saw Lara leave Jonah’s wedding early to investigate Sam’s apartment after she received a distressed call from her friend. Upon arriving at Sam’s place, she found it ransacked and learned that Sam had been investigating a crime syndicate run by a man named Vladimir.
The synopsis for Season 2 of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft was released along with the announcement and reveals that the new season will see Lara teaming up with her best friend, Sam, to investigate several stolen African Orisha masks. The synopsis hints at an enigmatic billionaire being a villain and also reveals the Orisha masks may link to a divine power:
“When adventurer Lara Croft discovers a trail of stolen African Orisha masks, she joins forces with her best friend Sam to retrieve the precious artifacts. Lara's thrilling new adventure takes her around the globe as she delves deeper into the hidden secrets of Orisha history, dodges the machinations of a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself, while discovering these relics contain dark secrets and a power that defies logic. Power that may, in fact, be divine.”
Perhaps what’s most exciting about Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft's renewal and the reveal that Sam will play a greater part in Season 2 is that it means The Boys star Karen Fukuhara will hopefully return to voice the character. Fukuhura had only a few lines as Sam in Season 1, but Season 2 will likely give her much more to work with and hopefully fill in some of the gaps with what went down between Lara and Sam after the last game. Atwell is also eager to return to voice Lara Croft again and has even recently expressed interest in playing the character in other mediums beyond the Netflix series.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
